What will happen to my property after I die?

Following the loss of a loved one, a lot of important decisions may need to be made quickly and the assets / liabilities of a deceased person must be identified and protected. This role is filled by the deceased's Personal Representative who is either appointed under a Will (an Executor) or who is a close living relative and beneficiary in the Estate where there is no Will (an Administrator). The Personal Representative should be made aware of your wishes in advance and particularly any special funeral arrangements, which you may want. Their functions include:

  • Arranging for Valuations of property, valuables and investments.
  • Identifying what debts there may be and making arrangement to have them paid.
  • Identifying all beneficiaries and notifying them of their entitlements in the Estate.
  • Dealing with any tax issues arising in the Estate.
